"Cabin Critters" with Rob Mies
Presented by the Organization for Bat Conservation
Did you know that a single little brown bat -- the most common bat in Wisconsin -- catches thousands of insects a night?  Did you know that hawks and owls work year-round at the cabin to keep the mouse and vole populations in check?  Have you ever seen a skunk up close and personal?

Learn about the benefits of these species and many other common second home "guests" at the "Cabin Critters" special feature at the show.   Rob Mies, scientist, conservationist, television personality and one of the world's leading bat experts takes us on an exciting journey into the world of life just outside our cabin doors.  Rob's entertaining and educational approach teaches us how to create critter-friendly habitat for our warm-blooded, cold-blooded and feathered friends.  Mies is the founder and director of the Organization for Bat Conservation at the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  He has appeared on many television shows including, The Tonight Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Fox & Friends and Martha Stewart.

Modern Ecological Cabin
Today's second home retreats are not the one-room, three-season cabins of the past. We now often use them year-round, which increases the drain on local energy resources and community services. Yet, we still want to keep a simple and spiritual connection to the wilderness. Join architect David O'Brien Wagner as he looks at how renewable and sustainable building and energy trends are leading to a new expression of getting back to the land in a special seminar on the Cabin Life Stage at noon on Sunday.

This Bunkhouse Rocks! (Saturday only)
What would your friends think if you had to live out of the bed of a pick-up truck? Apparently for several architecture students from the University of Minnesota, peer pressure is everything...at least for those wanting to pass the class! The assignment: Build a panelized "bunkhouse" that's light weight, can be transported in the bed of a pick-up truck and can be assembled and functionally used in the Great Outdoors. The finalists in the Dale Mulfinger "This Bunkhouse Rocks" architecture design assignment will display their structures from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 11 at the Lake Home & Cabin Show at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Show attendees are encouraged to drop by the special bunkhouse feature to see the structures, hear the student architects' stories and to vote for the "Best Bunkhouse of Show."
